What is WHMIS?

Many workers handle hazardous materials in their day-to-day jobs while others work in close proximity to these substances. They could be cleaners or solvents or maybe even contaminated blood products. Hazardous materials may cause serious illness or injury to workers and those around them, or they could cause fire or explosion. WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.  It is an information system that promotes worker health and safety while working with hazardous materials in the workplace. It is a national system that communicates hazard information in 3 key ways - labels on containers, safety data sheets, and worker education & training
